"...now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart."
-Frankenstein, Mary Shelley

A commission for *Loverofpiggies , Dmitri from her forthcoming manga Fringe Happy. After feverish work, Dmitri needs to turn to his anti-depressants for solace. Because he has dark fears of his own, especially when it comes to dreams...

I had a good time drawing pretty much every part of this piece. For some reason, even though I love the way she draws it, I always have a tough time getting the hair on *Loverofpiggies's characters right. The two toned look made things even tougher, but it was a fun challenge.

I did the blackboard last, and it was good to save that part until after midnight, when the sleepiness kicked in. Rambling aimlessly about Foucault and Freud becomes somewhat easier when you're in the zone, and things make sense while you're writing them that don't make sense when you're reading them over again. Which seemed to be the point, so I'm happy with it. ^_^

However, walking downstairs in the dark at one AM to get water after seven hours studying Fringe Happy and working on a piece from it leaves you ABSOLUTELY SURE that Benjamin is lurking in one of those shadows, ready to jump out and kill you. @.@ It's not paranoia by that point. It's certainty.

GAH, I SWORE I wrote a comment on this. Dang.

So I'll shorten up the comment I did.

I understand why it might be difficult to do the hair I do, we have vastly different art styles after all. Kinny was kinda hard for me to draw as well, mainly because I dont have characters who push their hair out of their eyes. But you did REALLY REALLY well on the hair, the double colors turned out beautifully!

You did the chalk board amazingly as well, I suppose being up at 1am doing it can probally do that to a person. :D And imagining Benjamin late at night is terrifying. 0__o I'm very sorry to put you through such a trauma. XD

Overall, I TOTALLY love it, it turned out amazingly.

Thank you! I'm really, really glad to hear that you like it. ^_^ I played around with a couple different ways of doing the two-toned hair. At one point, I had it similar to the way I did Susan's in the new Sire cover, but it just didn't look quite right.

The chalk board took some experimentation to get right. I found my own way to get the smudges in back, so I did a few layers of chalk to be erased underneath. I found a tutorial for chalk writing, and though it didn't come out quite as I'd hoped, it's tough to get it right when it's that small.

Don't worry, if it hadn't been Benjamin, it would have been something else. And he didn't even make an appearance in last night's nightmare, which I think was incredibly courteous of him. :XD:

This is SUCH a gorgeous, emotional piece.... I love it. So much packed into it... I get the feeling that there is MUCH more than first meets the eye. The business of the chalkboard and the things written on it create such a feeling of internal conflict and turmoil. I could stare at this for hours. Fantastic job. Absolutely fantastic.

I had to give him one, and that some seemed to work well. ^_^

Thank you, and double for the favorite! It's really tough to try and get a blank look done right, because it communicates nothing. You have to have the situation around communicate and put a message to the blank look, and that's somewhat tougher than slapping on a fearful or sad expression.
